In our family reading, we are on Farmer Boy, and last night read the chapter where they got a freeze on the 4th of July. They had to go out and hand water all the corn in the middle of the night before the sun came up. Right before we headed to bed last night, I remembered we hadn't ever put the Plexiglass window on the chicken coop, so they still had just a screen in the window. Maddy had shut their little door and put the water heater in yesterday, but with this window open and a wind chill of 18 at bedtime, we figured they'd be quite cold. So, out we went...I needed to hold everything from the outside while Earl screwed on the nuts inside the coop (and got pecked by the rooster).
After that, I happened to think of my little lettuce plants which managed to survive the 15 degree temps last week (I covered them with an old sheet). So, Earl rounded up some plastic and we gathered up pavers and covered that bed best we could...didn't think the sheet would work this time since we were expecting icy rain. We were talking about feeling like the Wilders while being out there, lol.
