Just wondering if any of you make your own presents/gifts to give out?
Or links to favorites?
I'm trying to decide on some hard to shop for people - My in-laws, Grandparents - I want to give something meaningful not necessarily spending money to spend money if you know what I mean.
I'm going to look and if I find some I'll share here

I seldom buy gifts. Almost everything I give is homemade. Mostly using fabric or yarn. :P I am thinking about making a small memory book for MIL. We shared some pictures with her last week of our chickens, dog, and cats. She loved them and wanted to keep them to look at throughout the week. So I wrote about each of the pictures on the back. I think a small book with a few pictures that she could carry in the pouch on her electric wheelchair, would be just the ticket for her. Cathie, maybe your grandparents would enjoy something similar.
Blessings,
Winona

yes. that's a good idea Winona :-* thanks

perhaps teacher gifts

I love homemade gifts! I appreciate the effort and thought put into them but some people in my family (they will remain anonymous ;)) don't like them. That's why we simplified our gift-giving several years ago.

These are some great ideas! I love to give and receive food gifts!
I have such fond memories of the gifts my grandmother made for me as a child--hand-sewn dolls, crocheted stuffed animals, flannel nightgowns, etc. I knew she put thought and love into every gift. :)
Winona, I like your idea of a memory book. I'm thinking that would be a nice present for my MIL, and fill it with pictures of her grandchildren.

I typically don't make them, but I'm planning to make at least some of the twinkie's presents this year. I'm planning to build them a play kitchen with oven, fridge, and sink and also some felt play food. Since their birthday is a week after christmas, this will probably get spread over both since they are such big gifts. Trevor's next paycheck will have some money set aside to get the building supplies. The plans I got were free. I'm also knitting Trevor a pair if fingerless gloves to use while he codes.
As far as gifts for others, I probably won't have time this year and just buy things.
-
We found 5 Thomas Kincard pics that the people had framed that we bought for a song so we are going to keep one and give 4 as christmas gifts. I also have stitched and framed three pieces as gifts. I am really close to being done with most of the gifts I need. I need to sit down and figure out what is left.

I will probably make some pumpkin rolls as small gifts to some. And jam. I also make buckeyes. What I do with my siblings is buy them something like a sweater or tee shirt, then make them a box full of homemade goodies. Last year I did an assortment of cookies and candies. I put them in a decorative box. I also make hard tack candy and fill quart size mason jars. I wrap pretty ribbon around the lid. Chad LOVES fudge. So I do make him several kinds of fudge and do the decorative box thing with him, too. I think homemade gifts mean more. Even if its something small and frugal. It takes more time to make a homemade gift and more thought goes into it.
However, I have already started my christmas shopping. I started last month with the boughten gifts for family. I am almost done with Chad!! Yay me!

I found a cute idea for a fishing game I'd like to make the grandbabies this year.

I don't do a ton of homemade gifts. I try to make something for my kids every year. Last year I made them new fleece blankets. Their old ones were falling apart! Thinking of making them sleep pants this year. They love getting new jammies at Christmas.
I also bake quite a bit. I love baking so its not a hardship to make those gifts ;).
We don't exchange gifts with many people. Makes things much easier!

I have homemade raspberry jam, apple butter and sugar scrub for the hands that I make to give as gifts. I also do babking, fudge and buns as well as everyone likes eating lol.

I've canned recently some applesauce & apple butter to use as gifts. Need more ideas for simple/inexpensive homemade ideas.......any updates for what you are working on?

I'm just getting started with this...really haven't done much homemade the past few years but it's a necessity this year so I need to get it in gear! :) This morning, I downloaded some free patterns I found online for a knit beanie and scarf for 18" dolls. Just used my Hobby Lobby coupon on the way home from the eye doctor to get some white yarn with occasional sequins to make these with. Maddy is making a skirt for that size doll in her sewing class and may try the t-shirt pattern I found to go with it for gifts for her sisters.
Also, I ran into an aquaintance in the yarn aisle of Hobby Lobby. I had met her at a Bible study this past summer and we have some mutual friends. She just took a beading class and was talking about a bunch of us getting together for a craft day. She could show us the beading, maybe we could swap supplies we have that we don't think we'll use, and then craft whatever we're working on the rest of the day. Sounds good!

Sounds like so much fun Catherine. :) You seem to have so many neat connections with many people in your area. :)

That sounds great, Catherine!

This 10 minute table runner is amazingly easy to make, i've done one for each season! This is the video I used as I learned how to do it the first time! Oh, I can't sew it in 10 minutes, for me it's more like a half an hour...;)

Thanks for sharing this Pixie. This would be quick, but I would also use some batting and quilt a few lines in it. ;D Just the way I roll. LOL These would be very nice hostess gifts for the holidays. ;)
Blessings,
Winona

Pixie- That is soooo CUTE!!! I love it! And I could even make that!!
Thanks for sharing. I am a visual person I have to see it 1st. I can improvise but need direction

I'm so glad you all like it! I have adjusted the measurements to get a longer runner too! I hope you all try it and Winona, what a great idea to quilt it, thats never crossed my mind but I am going to try it! Do you use warm and natural or traditional batting? I have both!
It's a very frugal gift especially if you buy material on sale! I have used buttons and fabric yo-yo's on the runners. I love my yo-yo maker!!

I wanted to add another favorite sewing project I do, I have made many of these and given them away this past year....this is the link to part 1 of the 2 part video. I love Missouri quilt co videos!!

Both of these look so easy! Thank you for sharing them, Pixie. :)
-
Pixie, if you plan to machine quilt, warm and natural is wonderful. It isn't ideal for hand quilting, though. I have used it, but it does not needle easily in hand quilting. :D This looks like a project that simple machine straight lines would look awesome. ;)

Winona

Winona, at what stage would you add the batting? Would you slip it in between the layers after you sew the long sides?
Thanks!

I was wondering the same thing. That would make sense to me, but I am a newbie at this kind of thing. ;D

Jennie,
Yep, that is when I would add it. Just cut your batting a little bit smaller than the sewed runner, so it doesn't bunch up too much. I think this would be ideal for simple machine quilting of straight lines. I think I already said that once. LOL Just look on the batting package to see how close it says to quilt. Some of them can be quilted 10 inches apart. This wouldn't have to have batting and would be lovely just like it is, but adding the batting would just make it a bit more special, in my opinion. LOL But since I am a quilter, I am a bit biased. LOL This would be a project that could be done in a couple of hours. I know it is supposed to take a lot less time than that, but I don't like to get in a hurry. LOL When I rush, I make mistakes. I haven't decided what to do for my daughters yet, but may try this. If I do, I'll try to take pictures as I go and post. No promises, though. LOL
Blessings,
Winona

I can tell you just how darling these aprons are. Pixie sent one to me and I just love it. I just finished watching both parts to this and it looks easy to do. I second it about loving Missouri Star Quilt videos. And to think, this shop is only about 60 or 70 miles away from me. I really must visit it some day. LOL Once again, Pixie, thanks for a great link.

Winona!
I am so happy you use your apron!! I've lost count of how many i've sewed up but I have yet to make one for myself!! lol
I am going to try a table runner quilted...you have inspired me!! :)
