: 2016 Reading Challenge
: MissMandy January 06, 2016, 10:08:54 AM
I need a challenge, not so much to read more, but to break out of reading the same book and same genres over and over.

The original challenge is:

- [ ] A book published this year
- [ ] A book you can finish in a day
- [ ] A book you've been meaning to read
- [ ] A librarian/bookseller recommended book
- [ ] A book you should have read in school
- [ ] A book chosen by your spouse, partner, BFF, child, etc
- [ ] A book published before you were born
- [ ] A book banned at some point
- [ ] A book you've previously abandoned
- [ ] A book you own but haven't read
- [ ] A book that intimidates you
- [ ] A book you've read at least once

And in addition, I've added to my own list:

- [ ] A Pulitzer-prize winning book
- [ ] A book more than 100 years old
- [ ] A book with an author who shares my initials
- [ ] A book that came out the year I was born
- [ ] A book set somewhere I would like to visit

I'm excited to see what everyone's book choices and recommendations are, as well as what my own books end up being but he end of the year!

Right now I am re-reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (book three of the series).  Me, rereading something?  Me, doing something HP related?  I know, SHOCKER! ;D  Anyway, this will count as my book I've read at least once.

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be doing here.  Do we pick from the list?

I'm all over the place with my reading.  Right now I'm reading When Secrets Strike by Marta Perry.  I guess this could count as my book I can finish in a day.

I'm currently reading For the Love by Jen Hatmaker.  I'm going to make an adaptation and instead of it being a book that a librarian or bookseller recommends, I'll say one that a friend recommended and put it in that category.  I don't go to the library often enough and hey, I like to bend the "rules"  ;)

I think of this list as suggestions for reading items that break me out of my same old choices.  I just thought we might want to list what we're currently reading and which category it fits into from the list.  No pressure, whatsoever, though!

I am currently reading a book called "Hunters in the Dark" by Lawrence Osborne.  It is a book I received through an early reviewers program.  After I read the book, I am supposed to review it on a website.  So far, I am not sure it fits any of the categories, but I am reading.  😊

Denise

Edited to add:  I think I am going to use it as my "Librarian/Bookseller recommended" book because I doubt I will get a recommendation from either of those and it does kind of fit that description.

I only added that one because I have two friends who are librarians, so I figured I would email and ask them what their recommendations were ;D.

Oh my gosh, ME TOO!!!!!  I am such a CC addict.  Sadly, when we upgraded our phones just before the new year I lost ALL of my progress (I was on level 600-something) because I didn't have it tied to Facebook.  Now I'm back on level 61.  Oh well :)

I've got this out from the library right now but haven't started it.

Just finished Brush Back from Sara Peretsky and it was pretty good.  Before that, I was on a roll with Linda Castillo for the month of December or thereabouts--her Kate Burkholder series, not the romances--haven't tried any of those.  They are murder/suspense type stories set in Amish country, but nothing like Beverly Lewis.

I am now also reading "Girls Like Us" by Rachel Lloyd which is about human trafficking in this country.  Molly read it for school and asked if I wanted to read it.  It is a difficult read because it is nonfiction but I am enjoying it if that is the right word.  It can count for my recommendation by my child.

Oh, Mandy - the librarian recommended book is a good category.  I have had recommendations from librarians in the past.  I just don't go as often as I used to go.  If I took a picture of the books in this house, you would know why.  😊

Mandy - Me, too!  There are books in nearly every room and even more in the basement waiting ever so patiently to make their way upstairs.  One of our local libraries has a sale to raise money for the library twice a year.  It lasts for three days.  The last day is $5 a bag.  Whatever you can fit into a plastic grocery bag is only $5. It doesn't matter how many books I have, I go every single time.  How could I not?  😊

Whoa, Denise.  That sounds like heaven!!  I am fortunate that we have a book fair (http://www.gobookfair.com (http://www.gobookfair.com)) about an hour away from us.  They only run for a few weeks at a time, then they close for a while, then restock and reopen for a few more weeks, closing for good mid-December through March.  Hopefully the 2016 schedule will come out soon (or maybe I just haven't seen it yet?).  I usually spend between $50-$75, but I walk out with BAGS of books, all only about $3-$7 each.  Love it!

I'm reading a book I've read before.

It's A Wilder Rose by Susan Wittig Albert.  I am really enjoying this book.  It's a novel based on Rose Wilder Lane' s diaries and letters.  Very interesting.  If you're a fan of the Little House books, I think you'd enjoy this one, especially as it focuses a lot on how the books were written and how much of a part Rose had in writing them.

I am not doing well in this.  I need to sit down and read and sadly, I have not had time and when I do have a little time, I just want to sit and do something completely mindless.  I'll hop on this and be better about it soon.  Just gotta get a little more organized here and then I can actually think.

I love this idea! I used to read all the time, but the last couple years, I just watch tv cause I feel too tired to do anything else.  I'd like to break that habit and read every other night and knit on my tv nights.

I think my first book will be Catcher in the Rye which is under the category of a book that should have been read in high school. It wasn't a required book, but I feel like it should have been.

The original challenge is:

- [ ] A book published this year
- [ ] A book you can finish in a day
- [ ] A book you've been meaning to read
- [ ] A librarian/bookseller recommended book
- [ ] A book you should have read in school (starting Catcher in the Rye)
- [ ] A book chosen by your spouse, partner, BFF, child, etc
- [ ] A book published before you were born
- [ ] A book banned at some point
- [ ] A book you've previously abandoned
- [ ] A book you own but haven't read
- [ ] A book that intimidates you
- [ ] A book you've read at least once

- [ ] A book set somewhere I would like to visit

Awesome, Shelly!  Catcher in the Rye was required when I was in school, and I LOVED it.  Enjoy :)

I've just started The Secret Garden, which is my 'recommended by my spouse' category.  I even found Jean's old copy in the basement, and it has sweet little drawings and additions that he made to the illustrations at the beginning of each chapter.

Cather in the Rye is one that I want to read too. My oldest read it and loved it so much that he bought it for his collection.

I did sit down and read a couple chapters of For the Love yesterday.. after halfway through, I realized that I had read those chapters already, lol.  The bookmark had fallen out and got put back in at the wrong place.  Oh well, I enjoyed the chapters again and plan to read some more today.

Tried to read Outlander and finally gave up.  Just not my genre, I guess.  Yesterday, got a notice from the library that the ebook of After the Storm by Linda Castillo was available so I downloaded that and have read 80% already, putting it ahead of several other books I have checked out or downloaded.

I don't have the excuse of moving, but have also been in a reading slump till that book yesterday.  By the time I have the free time to read, I'm ready to watch something instead.  But am now running out of the things I'm interested in watching.

I haven't posted here in a long time, but I have been reading.  I have read 12 books so far this year, but they don't all fit the categories we have chosen.  Here is what I have so far:

- [ ] A book published this year - Dodgers by Bill Beverly

- [ ] A book you can finish in a day - The Messenger by Lois Lowry

- [ ] A book you've been meaning to read

- [ ] A librarian/bookseller recommended book

- [ ] A book you should have read in school - To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee - this wasn't required when I was in school, but should have been.  I have read this before as well.  It is, probably, my favorite book.

- [ ] A book chosen by your spouse, partner, BFF, child, etc - Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult

- [ ] A book published before you were born

- [ ] A book banned at some point

- [ ] A book you've previously abandoned

- [ ] A book you own but haven't read

- [ ] A book that intimidates you

- [ ] A book you've read at least once - Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

- [ ] A Pulitzer-prize winning book

- [ ] A book more than 100 years old

- [ ] A book with an author who shares my initials

- [ ] A book that came out the year I was born

- [ ] A book set somewhere I would like to visit

I am currently reading We Are Not Ourselves, and it's...hmmm...not sad...scary? Scary that the lives of the characters could be our lives one day?  Without giving too much away, the father is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's, and you follow the progression through the eyes of his wife and child.  I've almost finished it, and I really have no idea how it will turn out or how I will feel at the end.

Mandy, I agree with you on To Kill a Mockingbird.  It is also one of my favorite movies.  I am currently reading Go Set a Watchman which is the sequel or whatever they called it.  Let's just say, it is not going to hold the same place in my heart as the original.  😕

I finished Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult yesterday.  It was fabulous!  Last Christmas, I bought it for Madelyn and she bought it for me, too!  I am putting this in my "Recommended by a family member" category.

Oh, good!  That is the one that seemed to have nothing but good reviews.  Ya know, I was thinking about it and I believe this may be my first fiction read since college. Yikes :o!  Too many things to learn over the years that I just ended up reading all nonfiction and reference to keep learning.  May be good to try something different.

I have been reading a lot of books lately by Diane Chamberlain. What I don't love are a few (very few) sex scenes but that is part of what makes the story so I get over it. "The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes", "The Silent Sister", "Pretending to Dance", "Necessary Lies" are all very interesting and I often cannot put the book down. I'm also reading a lot of WWII love stories that are fiction but based on true life experiences. I've also read "The Girl on the Train" which was not my favorite but it was OK.

I enjoyed The Girl on the TrainThe Woman in Cabin 10 is on reserve at the library and I am finally next in line.

I tried a couple of Gillian Flynn books the past couple of weeks.  Whoa!  I like the plot turns but think they are a bit too dark for my taste.

I'm still reading, actually quite a lot, just haven't been posting much.  Once in a while, I update on goodreads, but don't always bother.  Just started another AT trail hiking memoir--those are bittersweet.  Love the stories, but want to be out hiking it, not just reading about it so they leave me a little depressed.

Haha!  I read Gone Girl followed by Dark Places.  Both hard to put down.  I guess I just can't read too much dark stuff back to back, and I had just read In the Woods by Tana French (I think) the week before and have the second book in the series in on e-book from the library to read next--also dark twisty books.

Today, I stopped by the library to look for some audio books to listen to while I work on an afghan I'm crocheting for a Christmas gift.  And what do you know?!?  The Woman in Cabin 10 was in for me.  So I have that, the second Dublin Murder Squad book, and my AT book I'm currently reading.

Yup.  I can just see myself calling everybody 'love' and referring to  a 'bugger' or a pain in the 'arse'. lol ;D

Just finished In a Dark, Dark Wood yesterday.  I love books where you think you have it figured out halfway through, but it ends completely different than you thought.  It was one of those.  Started on What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty last night, but I am already thinking it may not be my style. It is more of a romantic comedy, but I guess I shouldn't make a decision only 10 pages in. Thinking the suspense ones are more fun.

Mandy, I looked for We Were Liars but couldn't find it.  May look on amazon, I am sure they will have it there. Read the plot summary and it sounded good.

I finished The Woman in Cabin 10 and really enjoyed it.  I checked out Home by Harlan Coben to read next.

Anyone else reading much?  I have been reading up a storm!  Like on my 14th novel in less than 5 months.  Right now I am reading The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty.  About half way through and it is pretty good.  So weird how I used to do anything to get out of having to read and now I actually really like to read.  What are you reading?

I try to read some every night, but usually fall asleep.  I read a little during the day if I get some time to myself.

Right now I'm reading a James Patterson book.  I've been reading a few of his lately.  I tend to find an author I like and then try to read everything they've written.

I struggle to find time to read as of late.

I was reading A Man Called Ove.  Didn't get through it. Not because of the book or storyline. Just me not setting aside time to read.

Maybe that should be one of my New Year's Goals!

Enjoy!
