Oats-ingredient of the day-12/13/13
« on: December 13, 2013, 10:30:36 AM »
In baked oatmeal.

Just to eat as oatmeal, with varied toppings.

Pulsed in the vitamix into oat flour to use in some recipes.

As filler/binder in meat loaf.

In granola bars or homemade granola cereal.

In some muffins or cookies.

Seems like there must be a lot more ways to use these inexpensive but healthy grains.  I'd love to hear everyone else's usages.

I make granola
oatmeal chocolate chip cookie - sneak them in for my son
granola bars - I have tried a couple of recipes but the chewy granola ones are my sons favorite and I have not one quite like that yet - I have another recipe to try  ;)

I make granola and a hot cereal my husband calls mush (2 parts cream of wheat and 1 part each oatmeal, wheat germ, and cornmeal).  We do not eat plain oatmeal, my parents did not cook it when we were kids and we only had it served at camp - a lot of bad memories with that.

I also use it as a filler in meatloaf and meatballs.  Our favorite muffins are oatmeal muffins.  The kids favorite bread recipe is oatmeal bread, toasted with some real butter on it, yummy!  Cookies, raspberry crumb breakfast bars, and granola bars.

I pretty much do what Catherine does. The children had oatmeal just this morning.

I have oatmeal every single morning. I like mine with brown sugar and 2 T. of peanut butter. Yum!!

We make oatmeal bread, granola bars, cookies, granola, etc.

It is a staple in our kitchen, right up there with rice, pasta, etc.
