Guess what Kevin ordered me for my birthday?

My birthday is in a bit over a week. Kevin asked what I would like to have. Well, I have a Berkey water filter coming, trees for an orchard coming, chickens coming, and lots of heirloom seeds coming. Nah, I didn't need anything else. Then I thought about a crock. I mentioned it to Kevin. So now I have an Ohio Stoneware 3 gallon crock coming. I am excited about this. I can make dill pickles and kraut in it. I have never had a crock and never had much luck with kraut. Now I am ready to try again.  Not everyone would want a crock for their birthday, but I am an old country girl.  I think I will ask for a new canner for Mother's Day. LOL

Anyone have any good instructions for making kraut?

I don't know Winona, but this sounds like what my husband refers to as a "strategic" gift.  Like me thinks that someone might be wanting some homemade pickles.

Ooh, have fun with that!  I have been eyeing them but am not very good at fermented foods yet...you will have to let us know how it goes.

I remember my mother making kraut in a crock, but I don't know how she did it.  It was so good.
